Who governs the Foundation, where every euro goes and what was done with last year’s

Why we publish this

A cultural foundation lives on money that other people decide to entrust to it. Whoever gives that money — a person donating fifty euros, a company signing an agreement, a public body awarding a grant — has the right to know who governs the entity, where every euro goes and what was done with last year’s. This section exists to answer those three questions without anyone having to ask.

The Fundación Enrique E. Cofiner is a private, non-profit cultural entity, registered with the Foundations Registry of the Government of Catalonia and covered by the special tax regime of Law 49/2002 on the tax treatment of non-profit entities and tax incentives for patronage. Constituted before a notary in Barcelona on 15 July 2021, it is subject to the supervision (protectorado) of the Catalan Government, which oversees compliance with its purposes and the proper use of its resources.

Purposes

The Foundation’s object is to preserve, study, reinterpret and disseminate the work of the composer Enrique Escudé-Cofiner (1909–1996), whose output spans European classicism, the flamenco tradition, the sardana, popular song and symphonic composition.

That object takes shape in four permanent lines of work:

  • Conservation and cataloguing. More than three hundred works catalogued and digitised. The composer’s personal archive was donated in 2017 to the SGAE’s Documentation and Archive Centre (CEDOA), where its conservation and public consultation are guaranteed.
  • Music production. Recording and publishing the composer’s work in contemporary performances, with professional performers and record labels.
  • Support for performers. Commissions, prizes and recording sessions for young musicians who bring the Cofiner repertoire into their work.
  • Dissemination. Concerts, presentations, audiovisual production and collaboration with academic institutions and cultural media.

Governing bodies

The Foundation is governed by a Board of Trustees (Patronato), the body that approves the annual accounts, sets the lines of action and answers for the fulfilment of the foundation’s purposes. Its members serve without remuneration.

  • Isabel Escudé-Cofiner Fuentes — President
  • Isabel Rojo Escudé-Cofiner — Vice-President

Musicological advice

Irene Valle de Lope, musicologist with a master’s degree in Music Analysis and Theory, responsible for the analysis of the works for the Boileau edition and for cataloguing the Cofiner archive at the SGAE’s CEDOA.

Structure and staff

The Foundation operates with a deliberately light structure and no permanent employees. All activity is carried out through professional service contracts with suppliers, performers and advisers, engaged project by project. Accounting and tax administration are outsourced to an accountancy firm.

This structure has a direct and intended consequence: practically all resources go to cultural production, not to sustaining an organisation.

Use of funds

The Foundation devotes all its resources to its statutory purposes. It carries out no commercial activity, and any surplus is reinvested in full in new cultural productions.

In accordance with article 3 of Law 49/2002, the Foundation applies at least 70 % of its income to its purposes of general interest, a requirement on which the special tax regime depends.
