Suite Flamenca, the album in which Diego Amador reinterprets five works by Enrique Escudé-Cofiner at the piano, has received two awards at the third Spanish Music Academy Awards: Best Instrumental Album and Best Arrangement. The ceremony took place on 27 May 2026 at the Palacio Municipal of IFEMA, Madrid.
It is the most important recognition yet for a recording devoted entirely to the composer’s work, and comes just fourteen months after the album’s presentation at the SGAE’s Frederic Mompou hall in Barcelona on 25 March 2025.
An album made by one person
Diego Amador — winner of Spain’s National Music Prize and one of the most singular pianists in contemporary flamenco — recorded, performed and mastered Suite Flamenca entirely on his own. The album gathers Rondó Gitano, Embrujo, Imágenes de España, Sierra Morena and Nocturno: five pieces Cofiner wrote over his lifetime, most of which had remained far from the public. Amador dedicated the album to his brother, the guitarist Rafael Amador.
The Best Arrangement award singles out exactly what makes this work unique: Cofiner’s classical piano writing, formed in the Barcelona of the early twentieth century, reread from inside the flamenco idiom without losing the original score. Best Instrumental Album places it among the year’s most outstanding recordings in Spain, in any genre.
What it means for the Foundation
The Fundación Enrique E. Cofiner produced Suite Flamenca as part of its mission: to promote, disseminate and programme the composer’s work and have it played again by today’s performers. That a jury of music-industry professionals rewards the result confirms that this catalogue — more than a hundred works across songs, piano pieces and orchestral music — is fully alive.
